For a car-free day from Milan to Bellagio, the most coherent route is usually rail to Varenna-Esino followed by a central-lake ferry. It uses the lake as part of the journey instead of forcing a long detour around it.

For most car-free visitors, use Milan → Varenna-Esino by train, then Varenna → Bellagio by ferry.

The published rail journey reaches Varenna-Esino, not Bellagio. The ferry handover and the selected lake crossing still belong in the plan.

The two names describe different parts of the journey. Search the rail station for the train and Varenna/Bellagio terminals for the ferry.

Is the train from Milan to Varenna direct?

Is Varenna or Como better for reaching Bellagio from Milan?
Varenna is often the cleaner handover for a car-free Bellagio day because the east-shore rail line meets the central-lake ferry network there. Como can make sense for a different itinerary or accommodation base, but it is not automatically the simpler route to Bellagio.
How much connection time should I allow in Varenna?
There is no one safe number for every traveller or season. Build a comfortable buffer for leaving the station, reaching the correct ferry terminal, queues and any rail delay rather than relying on a tight scheduled connection.
