Castello di Vezio

Castello di Vezio is an ancient fortress on the promontory above Varenna, set in a centuries-old olive grove and a Mediterranean garden with the Alps as backdrop. With origins in the early Middle Ages and a strategic position dominating the centre of Lake Como, it served as a military outpost controlling the lake and surrounding villages, protecting Varenna through medieval conflicts. Today, an entry ticket opens up more than ramparts and views: you can explore the gardens, visit the underground areas (including basements dating to the First World War), walk sections of the town walls, and climb the tower for sweeping, all-round panoramas. Inside the tower there’s a permanent exhibition on the Lariosaurus, and outdoors the route is punctuated by sculptures—most famously the “white ladies” that echo the castle’s long-running ghost legends, including tales linked to Queen Teodolinda.

Historical context

Castello di Vezio stands on a promontory above Varenna, in a position chosen for both military and commercial advantage, with views across the central part of Lake Como. The site is described as being inhabited since the Iron Age.

The castle is presented as an ancient military outpost of early medieval origin, built to defend and control the lake and the surrounding villages. During the Middle Ages, its walls once enclosed the village down to the lake, and the fortress helped protect Varenna and its people during periods of war and raids.

Alongside its defensive past, the castle is also wrapped in local legend. One tradition links it to the Lombard queen Teodolinda, said to have ordered its construction, and whose spirit is still associated with the rooms today.
